Aerostats

Skyship Services, Inc variety of Aerostats, like the U.S Army’s Persistent Threat Detection System (PTDS) and the U.S Air Force’s Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS), have consistently met and surpassed stringent client requirements. With our dedicated designs, calibrated analytic tools, comprehensive system and sub-system testing facility, and expansive facilities for production, system assembly, integration, and final flight certification, Skyship Services, Inc can meet and surpass your requirements too.

Skyship Services, Inc 74k Aerostat

The 74K Aerostat System was selected by the U.S. Army for its Persistent Threat Detection System (PTDS) deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. This lighter than air system was used to provide soldiers with long-range intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and communication assistance.

Mooring: Mobile/Re-locatable

Payload: 500 kg (1,102 lbs)

Operating Altitude: 1,500 m (4,921 ft)

Radar Horizon: 160 km (99 mi)

Hull Volume: 2,100 m3 (74,000 ft3)

Length: 35 m (114 ft)

Tether: Power with fiber optics

The PTDS Aerostat is crafted with an aerodynamic design that allows it to fly in harmony with the wind, operating without the need for a propulsion system. To maintain stability, the Aerostat is consistently oriented into the wind’s direction. Furthermore, the wings and fins of the Aerostat play a significant role in bolstering the overall stability of the system.

“PTDS has come to be a jewel of the collection assets employed.” LTC David Clonts Deputy G3 (Acting G3) 1st Cavalry Division.

The Skyship 74K Aerostat System is currently deployed and supporting the US Army Persistent Surveillance Systems-Tethered (PSS-T) Program OCONUS and the Department of Homeland Security Customs & Border Protection on the US Southern Border.

“I’ve seen this system in operation during my fact-finding trips to Iraq and have received very positive feedback from the men and women who use it. This positive feedback has been echoed by senior Army officials at the Pentagon as well.” Rep. Jim Saxton, R-N.J., ranking Republican on the Air and Land Forces Subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, April 19, 2007.

Skyship Services, Inc 275k Aerostat

The 275K Aerostat System is one of two configuration selected by the Department of Homeland Security & Customs & Border Protection for their Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS).

Helium Volume: 7,792 m3 (275,176 ft3)

Overall Length: 56 m (186 ft)

Payload: 589 kg (1,300 lbs)

The 275K Aerostat is a tethered, Lighter-than-air vehicle that is one of the most aerodynamically stable of its kind. It moors in steady winds of up to 90 knots and can maintain stable flight in 65 knot winds. Additionally, it is capable of providing long range detection of low altitude aircraft.

Skyship Services, Inc 420k Aerostat

The Skyship 420K Aerostat System is the standard aerostat design selected by the Department of Homeland Security & Customs & Border Protection for their Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS).

Mooring: Fixed Base

Payload: 998 kg (2,200 lbs)

Operating Altitude: 4,572 m (15,000 ft)

Hull Volume: 11,893 m3 (420,000  ft3)

Length: 64 m (210 ft)

All TARS systems are equipped and integrated with Skyship Services L88 wide area surveillance radar specifically designed for aerostat operations. The TARS systems provides low-level radar surveillance for the United States-Mexico border, the Florida Straights, and part of the Caribbean in support of U.S. Counter-Drug and Counter-Narco Terrorism missions and other continental United States air sovereignty missions. The TARS is optimized for detecting low, slow flying aircraft as well as maritime and surface targets.

Skyship Services, Inc 660k Aerostat

The system was designed with Skyships L88 Radar Technology.

Skyships 660K Aerostat System was the United States Customs Service aerostat choice for their Southwest Tethered Aerostat Program (STAS), one of two configurations selected.

Overall Length: 76 m (250 ft)

Payload: 1,814 kg to 4,572 m (4,000 lbs to 15,000 ft)

Gross Buoyant Lift: 10,586 kg (23,340 lbs)

Capable of lifting a 4,000 lbs payload to 15,000 ft allowing long range detection up to 200 nautical miles for targets as small as 2 meters.
